"What happened to all the purebloods?"
It's like a bedtime tale, telling her this. She hasn't been with him for very long. History is one thing. One can learn all the facts there is to be written in a book but there is always a grim truth that people try to hide. What reason is there to depress the youthful vampires of a society bent on corruption? There's no need to worry them about the consequences of their blood. After all, they are simply tools to the Council.
He has no perfect answer. There is no pretty way to say it. Purebloods eventually lose the will to live. When one has an eternity to exist, they can gain fame, they may have their fortunes, they will have their lovers, but there is one thing that is missing. One thing that makes life precious, whether they are a human or a vampire.
A reason.
If he did not have Yuuki when Rido mercilessly murdered their parents, would he have made it to today? Could he truly say he had a purpose without Yuuki? Everything has been for her. Cross Academy, the Moon Dorm, Artemis and Bloody Rose, the slaughter of the Vampire Council and his conquest to decimate war and corruption and co-exist with humans... every time he unleashed the power of a pureblood, every time Kiryuu bit into his flesh and drank his blood--a treasure some low-level would never deserve--, every body that lay in his wake... it has all been for her.
He's afraid. He doesn't want to lose his reason.
He brought her up to this secluded place, not to lock her away, but so he could protect her better. He limits her because she is young and naive. He is strict because there are those who would take advantage of her. He was a tool himself, or so they thought. He will not allow the same to befall her.
His last thoughts as he lays his head in her lap and those soft fingers stroke his hair are that he must do it quickly. He must make a world where Yuuki can be by his side because he cannot bear the loneliness any longer.
