Summary: Where did he go?
There are times, even now, when Cloud asks himself 'where did he go?', wonders what happened to that hero of Shinra, that majestic creature everyone looked up to, that god.
It seems strange, after all that he had done, after all the people he killed, the suffering he caused, the plans he had, to think about him and feel a bit of remorse. If they had never gone to Nibelheim, would things have turned out this way? Would Zack be dead? Would he have the reputation he has today? Would he have lost his mind?
But Cloud has no answers, for himself, for Zack, for even Sephiroth. He doesn't know what could have been different, where the world went wrong. Maybe it was always there, some sort of voice eating away at the perfect SOLDIER until he finally snapped, only being a coincidence when and where it happened. He doesn't know why Nibelheim, Zack, Tifa, Aerith, the planet had to be dragged into it. He doesn't know... anything.
As always, there's a sound in the church and he tenses, seeking out those cat-like eyes that could pierce a soul, stop a heart, cause bald spots in otherwise very healthy young men, even if he didn't mean to. He waits for his voice, his taunts, the glint of metal. He sits in silence, hoping the answer will be made clear.
Why did his hero allow himself to be consumed by bitterness, hatred and distrust? Why did he point his sword at Zack, at Aerith, at him? How was it that someone who was perfect was torn away from reality and devoured by things that only mortals are capable of falling to?
"Go back to sleep," he says, to what seems like no one in particular. "Just... go back to sleep."
Why...
Because, he tells himself firmly, curling back up on his blanket. Because, he was only human too.
