Run as far as you can!

It was a very simple concept. One he didn't like, of course, but one he knew better than to argue with. Even his instincts left over from the battle-oriented division seemed to take a backseat when the weight and warmth against his chest shifted, reminding him of the urgency of the situation. The importance to put her safety above all else. His duties, his dreams, his life... none of them mattered. At that point, he couldn't say he had much of a future left. The surges of spiritual pressure from the lieutenants and captains said as much. The chances of survival were bleak...

Even with such dismal chances, even with a body that was only capable of performing the simple task of running, hiding, providing nothing more than shield, he was fully prepared to do it all and more, if it meant her safety.

That had been why he joined the academy. Their friends all died in Rukongai. There was nothing there for them, sure, but if it meant that he could be beside her, fight with her and protect her and those who ended up growing as they did, then he was fully prepared to die for them.

How long had it been since the flare of his captain's spiritual pressure began clashing against Ichigo's immense one? 'Clash of the titans' was definitely an accurate description from his stand point, surely far enough away from them and anyone else who thought to make quick work of them. Relying on Ichigo to do something he could not... it was shameful.

In the end, it was and always would be Ichigo stepping in, wouldn't it? Rukia had grown attached to both him and the human world. Hell, even he was relying on that idiot to get them out of trouble while he ran like a coward, tail between his legs.

Through the shihakushou and the stiff bandages, she was trembling. She was afraid. Who wouldn't be? To be called a traitor and hunted down by friends and family alike. Treated like nothing more than a stray dog from the streets of Rukongai. To be in the very arms of one of the men who came to strike her down, that dragged her back to Soul Society to be judged and executed, had to be absolutely confusing and downright ridiculous. Renji hadn't done anything to help squash that fear when he came running to save her, either.

What had taken so long? After his fight with Ichigo in the world of the living, he had thought that then he had made his choice. He'd managed to drag Rukia back by the scuff of her neck and toss her in jail. That should have been the end of it. Then Ichigo had to show up. His resolve wavered after that battle. He'd known all along how wrong it was and he had been sure that his captain wouldn't go through with such a heinous act of executing her for something like 'abandonment'. He couldn't win with a disconnected heart. So he took that as a sign to face up to everyone and prove that he could do what no one else had the balls to do.

And he still lost. For a while, remembering the feel of Senbonzakura's blades cutting into his flesh, he believed that he wasn't worthy to be Rukia's knight, as horribly corny and weird that sounded. If he couldn't uphold the laws but he couldn't win by putting all his heart into saving her, how was he any good to her?

But no. He couldn't let it go. He had to try again because he wasn't about to give up on her or himself and that was just the way he knew he had to live. That was something he learned long before the Thirteen Court Guard Squads and he knew there would be a day he'd need it.

"I'll say it one last time, Renji. Put Rukia down and get away from here."

He grit his teeth. The coward in him screamed to obey. Aizen was a captain. He was way stronger. He was wounded. Zabimaru was broken, but still he clung, one hand cradling her to his chest, fingers gripping her shoulder. If he let go now, he'd never forgive himself. If he gave up, what would have been the point in all the fighting, the tears, the blood, the sweat, the pain... what would have been the point of all the sacrifice everyone had made, on either side, to surrender to a traitor? And even more still, her trembling and shaky voice still had not disappeared. Her tone... she wasn't afraid for herself anymore. She was afraid for him.

"I already told you. I'm not letting her go." He couldn't let her be scared for him. What kind of look would that be, seeing as he was supposed to be saving her. The conversation continued, he couldn't hear. He didn't want to listen. Betrayal was devastating, but his body's lack of response was the most cruel thing in the world. How could he protect her if he was hesitating like this?

"I'll go with you, just don't hurt him!"

Rukia... no.

He'd watched people walk off with her too much already. The Kuchiki family took her away and gave her everything he couldn't have given them back in Rukongai. Ichigo swept up and saved her, probably countless times, and faced death against high ranking Soul Reapers just to keep her... and then, the Punishment Force took her after her brief imprisonment. He wasn't about to let anyone, let alone a true traitor, take her away again, even if it meant death!

"I won't let anyone take you away from me!"
