Summary: Their lives are full of misfortune, but death is a scary thing...

The first sign that misfortune has an uncanny taste for them is when the Thorn's distinctive patterns began appearing and eating away at flesh.
That is the final straw that starts eating away at his strength. They fight to live, slaying chiropterans because that is what they are told to do. They feed to thrive, because that is how they are created. This life of testing and pain is what they must endure, because that is their only purpose.
But were they created to die? Why were they born into these lives of deception and cruelty? What makes them any different, aside from their susceptibility to the sunlight and the need to feed on human blood? Why must they suffer because of humans?
He reaches up through the bars, reaching for the lights overhead and trying to grasp the sky beyond it. He can’t bear to suffer anymore. He doesn’t have the strength that Karman or Ghee have, but he can get out of there. The gears of his mind are turning. He has a plan for all of them to escape, to survive this unwelcome misfortune and he will share it with his brothers and sisters and their desire to be free…
