Title: True Fear
Fandom: Bleach
Characters/Pairings: Byakuya; Rukia, mentions Aizen
Rating: PG
Warnings: Spoilers for the Soul Society Arc end?
Author Note: Batty and I were talking about what my stoics would fear the most. Byakuya obviously doesn't fear much, but we all know he shows how much he fears having Rukia hurt, or even just threatened, and the anger that comes with it (tsk, tsk, Zommari), so I think this is his greatest fear. Not necessarily losing Rukia but...
Summary: It's always the same.
It's always the same.
He can still feel the steel pierce his flesh, a cold wave of dark fatigue washing over him. He doesn't feel the ground as he falls, still clutching to the trembling weight that he knows to be his sister from her cries. He only knows there a swell of relief in his heart that combats the cold, numbing feeling threatening to consume him. There is no such thing as pain, he reminds himself... he can overcome such silly things.
He must move. He must run. It's the only thing on his mind when he sees that man out of the corner of his eye begin to draw his sword. Rukia's warmth reminds him he still has a job to do. Her shuddering breath, her trembling body, her meager attempts to protect him... they tell him he has to move.
But his limbs are much to heavy, his head too light to give his muscles proper instructions. He doesn't have a Senbonzakura, no kidou... not even shunpo. And that man, a man he'd always respected, ever since he'd met him as a boy, approaches ever-so-slowly, his sword glinting in the sunlight.
And he still can't move. He can't tell her to run, he can't force himself to his feet, he can't even erect a tiny barrier to give themselves the time necessary to evade. There is no one but the three of them. There's no one to protect her...
Her shrill cry as the sword pierces her flesh rings in his ears and his heart stops. She slumps against him, the splash of blood from her pierced heart splashing over his face.
On these nights, he lingers longer than necessary outside of her bedroom, listening to her soft breaths and the occasional mumble. He hasn't been the best big brother... he hasn't even been a decent acquaintance, but he's reassured by those gentle sounds of a peaceful slumber on the other side of that door.
He doesn't fear death, doesn't fear battle. He doesn't fear opponents and he doesn't fear pain.
There are few things that Byakuya Kuchiki fears in this world and even fewer he'd ever admit to. However... there is something he hates, a feeling that he knows well and fears. He lost Hisana to it and the thought of losing Rukia...
... his greatest fear is powerlessness.
