Title: Matron of the Order
Fandom: D.Gray-Man
Characters/Pairings: Matron; Allen, Kanda, Lavi, Lenalee, Noise, Komui, Johnny, Reever
Rating: PG
Warnings: After the attack on Headquarters
Author Note: I feel /so/ bad for the nurse lady (not that I can remember her name). She really is an awesome character, even if she's only minor and I love her to pieces, especially when she gets annoyed when her patients escape. xD
Summary: ... because it's her job to save them from themselves.
Dedication: To those awesome nurses out there that you just love and hate to be a patient of.

She watches them everyday. Exorcists, Finders, the various staff members that work to make the Order run as... efficiently as possible. From exhaustion to sprains to broken bones and internal bleeding, she sees it all and she works diligently to keep her patients alive, comfortable and in the best condition possible.

For every drop of blood, for every bruise, for every tear, her heart breaks again and again. She's growing too old for this job, but she's pretty sure that there is no one else who could handle these people, their tempers and personalities, the insanity that comes with being the Head Nurse or the emotional strain as each of those who feel just like her children as she wraps their wounds, drags them back to bed or even sits and listens to their sobs, their reasons, their pain.

Allen's heart breaks every time he cannot save someone. Kanda is strong and cold, but she knows that there are times when he needs his privacy to do things he'll never allow another to see. Lavi is a prankster, but at the moment, he's barely giving a smile. Noise is sensible, but his sense has turned to 'what-if'. Johnny, Reever and the others of the various divisions mourn their loses, their powerlessness and are bitter with the outcome. Lenalee is cheerful, as much as she can expect, but her words still resonate in her head. Komui has not been himself, even though she knows he tries. She can see it in each of them... 'how many died to protect me? to help me? how many more will die before it's over?' and she can do nothing.

Exorcists shouldn't be used to pain. The staff shouldn't have to worry about their lives. She shouldn't have to wonder when each of them will come back to her, a bloody mess, that she can't save. She shouldn't have to worry that Allen will break, that Lenalee will cry, that Kanda's impressive healing will stop, that Lavi will disappear, that the Supervisor will lose. They are only human... they aren't tools. They aren't weapons. They're just poor humans who need love and affection and a family...

"Where do you think you're going?!" She snaps, not bothering to turn around to look at the group assembled at the doors, her fingers working on the bandage around Lenalee's head.

"Stupid Moyashi!" Kanda shoves Allen away from the door and escapes swiftly. It's not long before others are taking advantage of it.

"Sorry Allen-kun!" Komui calls, hurrying out the door.

"Yeah, buddy!" Johnny and Reever roll over the wounded Exorcist.

Noise doesn't murmur a word, though he looks apologetic.

At the sound of footsteps, she reaches out and grasps the closest pair of ears, Lavi and Allen, sacrificed for the uncooperative patients' escape. Both are aptly sent to bed and she rolls up her sleeves, picks up her skirt and, with a determined look, storms off to search each and every one of them out. No one escapes from the matron's Infirmary!

... because it's her job to save them from themselves.
