1. Dagger

He watches from afar, everyday, determined not to interrupt this vicious mission she’s on. He is not immune from the selfish desire of wanting such dedication to himself, but he understands. Hisana’s mission is very important to her and what is important to her is important to him. While he is busy, unable to go with her and fulfill this mysterious mission, he wants to be able to do all he can.

It seems, however, that all he can do is sit and watch, to sit beside her when she suffers, watch as her eyes fill with disappointment, sorrow and fatigue when she fails to complete this mission of hers… he can only let her slip away and it’s like a dagger in his heart, twisting a little more each day because he’s simply helpless.

2. Red

There are a number of times he’s come home, tainted, covered in something red that he refuses to let her see. She can’t help but be a little concerned, knowing the dangerous life he leads that seems to be in another world, far away from the sanctity of the Kuchiki Manor.

She tries desperately to stand beside him, when she’s well enough, or her search has come up empty-handed, tries to be there when he gets home from his job because the only thing that makes it okay to stay by his side is this feeling she knows that neither one of them really has the time to show.

Whenever he rushes past in the courtyard, a flash of red against his pale flesh, she knows that there’s nothing she can do. He won’t let her worry about him, even though he constantly worries for her. So when he falls asleep and the red is gone, she breaks formalities, places a gentle kiss on every speck of recently scrubbed flesh, hoping to soothe the wounds that lie just beneath the surface.

3. Memory

Memories are painful, it’s true. No one likes to remember the things of the past, especially the painful ones, ones that represent loss and extreme change. He doesn’t like to think about them either because it isn’t the past that he must live in. As the twenty-eighth Head of the Kuchiki Clan, he doesn’t have the time to linger on the things he lost, the people who left him.

Life isn’t simple. It isn’t meant to be. Life isn’t a game, it isn’t fun, it’s not easy, but living it is to conquer. Conquering those terrible memories allows him to concentrate on the ones that brought him happiness, that made those long, tiring nights worth it.

He closes the book filled with elegant writing by his hand in a pen that is probably his second most-precious gift from a doting sister he knows he doesn't deserve. These are his most sacred memories, things he writes down daily, to tell Hisana when he fails vocally to express what he feels. It sits below her photograph the moment the incense goes out and Byakuya's off, determined to ensure that he can protect the things his memories are made of.

4. Lost

When she first came to live in the Kuchiki manor, Byakuya-sama had been called away, unable to give her a tour. Those in his employ had been busy with some sort of preparations and so, she had to fend for herself. She wandered for what seemed like hours, peering into rooms, listening to the conversations.

Even though the conversations are interesting (Ginrei Kuchiki has a habit of moving things into the strangest spots, blamed on his age and Yoruichi Shihouin sounds like a curious person), it still doesn’t help the fact that she’s lost. For the third time she finds herself leaning against a cherry blossom tree, unable to find out just how she got so turned around to be going in circles, but she finds she’s not alone.

“Are you lost?” He asks.

Automatically, her head bows, her eyes are cast on the ground and she greets him with the respect that he deserves. “Welcome home, Byakuya-sama. I’m afraid I couldn’t find the room you had prepared for me…”

“I will show you.”

He doesn’t move and she chances a glance at him. He watches the sky as she watches him, lost to this world. She moves beside him and stares up at the tree that’s become a sort of companion for her in her journey to find her room. There’s no point in being lost anymore because this is her place, right beside him.
