Shattered steel littered the grassy ground, glinting in the moonlight shining down from above. His son, standing across from him, ignored the blood running down his palm and gazed at him with respect of the outcome.
Tessaiga returned to its sheath, but he didn't feel like the victor of this battle. He'd known all along that Sesshoumaru wasn't trying to come at him at full force. He'd known that his son had chosen that particular blade to battle him with for a reason. Sesshoumaru wasn't looking to ruin his happiness or take away his mistress. He was just a pup, lost in the waves that had been caused by his father. He was angry. Angry that his father was leaving his mother, angry that he wasn't going to be the rival he wanted, angry that another woman, human woman had stolen him away from their perfect little family.
And, to be honest, Taishou didn't blame him. Sesshoumaru was still young, incredibly young. One day, he'd know what his words meant, the lessons he'd passed onto him ever since he'd been old enough to carry a sword.
"Wasn't there somewhere you were supposed to be, Father?" He asked cooly.
Taishou smirked. "Surrendering so easily?"
"This Sesshoumaru has no desire to pursue something so obviously mundane. If you want a human's weak heart, then, by all means, run to that woman."
His eyes flickered from the crescent on his son's head to the one in the sky. "Weak hearts?"
He heard Sesshoumaru shift. "Weak."
Taishou chuckled, unable to restrain it. "Is that how you see them? Sesshoumaru, have I taught you nothing?"
Silence, but he didn't expect much of an answer from him.
"You don't understand, do you? Humans are not weak because of their emotions. They are weak because of our influence on them. Their pure hearts... that power rivals even my own, my son."
The wind rushed through the field. The silence between them was necessary. He didn't want Sesshoumaru to misunderstand. Their physical prowess exceeded anything a human could come up with, this was true, but their power didn't lie there.
A human lived decades compared to demons. The two of them had seen many human empires come and go while the demon dominions remained strong throughout the centuries. With their limited life spans, they came to love much more thoroughly than demons. Sesshoumaru's mother may have loved them both, but boredom would cling eventually and their family and frayed ties would eventually break. He wanted something that would last.
"Protect her, Sesshoumaru. Protect your mother. Protect what is precious to you."
Maybe... one day Sesshoumaru, too, would understand it. He could only hope.
"Nonsense."
The roar and shattering steps told him that his son got a trait from both his parents that he didn't quite like. Taishou grinned knowingly and followed suit. "A game, Sesshoumaru? How unlike you!"
