Fitting in is hard to do with a family of chiropterans.
Title: Grand Canyon
Fandom: Blood+
Characters/Pairings: Kai
Word Count: 338
Rating: PG
Warnings: Maybe spoilers.
Author Note: Kai took this the hardest out of anyone. D:
Summary: What is left for him?
Disclaimer: Icon by my lovely Daddy.
The street that separates them says enough. The distance to cross may seem like so little and he can run quickly, catch up with them and touch them, but in reality, it's nothing more than something he can only pretend makes it better.
He wants to pretend that Saya isn't fighting. He likes to think that she is just his normal kid sister who eats too much and gets confused easy. He wants his brother to be normal again. He wants Dad to be walking with them instead of Haji. No offense meant, but it is his family he wants back, the times before Haji showed up and dragged his sister on a street covered in blood.
He watches them, standing there waiting for him. He's come to understand and appreciate Haji and what he is. Saya needs him. But now Riku is standing with them, changed forever because he was too stubborn to try and understand. A Chevalier... a chiropteran born of the blood of Saya, eternally young. They have no apetite. They don't sleep. Their only job is to protect her.
Red Shield seems to be standing with them too. Combat specialists and scientists and all that crap.
But he is forced to stand away, across a giant canyon to sit and watch them as they fulfill a destiny he doesn't understand. This destiny that he doesn't agree with.
Saya will go off to battle. She'll go to sleep and she'll have Haji and Riku waiting by her side until she does. He though... he'll grow older. He'll be able to see her maybe twice, and then he'll die. There's no mistaking it. He's just another human forced to watch everything around him change and disappear.
"Hurry up, Kai!"
Riku...
He shoves down the lump in his throat and forces a grin. "I'm comin', hold your horses!"
He doesn't want to, but it's clear. He's already fallen into the abyss of this canyon of mortality and weakness and he will never be able to escape it...
